Dorothy Parker is unwell (again)

It's been said before on the pond. Jeffrey Bernard was inclined to be unwell, the real Dorothy Parker was also inclined to be unwell, and now the ersatz Dorothy Parker has decided to be unwell again.

We're just stepping out of the tent. We may be some time.

  3. I imagine that regularly reading The Australian, particularly if possessed with a conscience cannot be good for one's health. So have a well deserved break and get well. The world needs loons....

  7. Likewise get well wishes DP - Australia needs you!

In the meantime perhaps we can keep the flag flying. I see piggy Akerman has another rant about Muslims this morning, but at least he does make passing reference to the Catholics. The title - "God needs to start smiting these idiots." And then Obama and Cameron come in for a serve, and John Howard was the only true crusader in the fight against terrorists. "Former Australian Prime Minister John Howard was remarkably prescient when he warned eight years ago that an Obama presidency would be a boon to terrorists."

  14. This book describes the wall-to-wall toxic legacy that the lying rodent via his role in the coalition of the shock-and-awe killing bequeathed to the people of Iraq - actions which inevitably set of the never-ending Orwellian war against terror.

  15. Gee whiz, it was a banner issue of rampant The Stupid in The Oz yesterday, and for some inexplicable reason I set myself the target of working out what Angela Shanahan was trying to communicate. Failing there, I tripped over the utterly vacuous editorial suggesting that we are all standing together against terrorism, and a gasket blew in my brain.
As suggested above, regularly trawls through tripe like this is not good for anyone Dot. Please recover completely, and at your chosen pace.
    Cheers,

  21. Interesting link to information about Andrew Bolt's alleged extra-marital affair with and close to ties to corrupt union official Kimberley Kitching and her con-man husband. Bolt was given the chance to refute the allegations but has refused to reply.

  22. Dorothy, we all wish you are better and we look forward to your return.

    In the meantime:

Tim Wilson, our twerpy Human Rights Commissioner, reveals he continues to suffer with foot in mouth disease. In today’s Oz in an article titled “Charlie Hebdo v 18C: no contest”, he states in part:

“18C doesn’t cover religion, but Charlie Hebdo published many cartoons on race as well as ethno-religious topics that could have been deemed offensive under it.

This is outlined in the explanatory memorandum to the bill that introduced 18C.

The memo said “it is intended that Australian courts would follow the prevailing definition of ‘ethnic origin’ … (which) involves consideration of one or more characteristics … this would provide the broadest basis for protection of peoples such as Sikhs, Jews and Muslims”. It’s this interpretation that led to former Sydney Morning Herald columnist Mike Carlton facing a complaint under 18C because of his disgraceful anti-Semitic language.”

In reply, Mike Carlton, via twitter lets fly with this missile: “I used no "disgraceful anti-Semitic language" and was not pinged by 18C. Tim Wilson is a posturing fuckwit. “

    Wendy Bacon adds:
@MikeCarlton01 normally wouldn't read but extraordinary lie & defamation goes through to keeper. Like Bolt - reckless as to facts”

  25. Hi Dorothy,

I am sorry to hear that you are not at your best and wish you a full and speedy recovery, the reason being that I am a greedy and tragic soul who would be bereft without your excellent analysis of the cess pool that masquerades as modern journalism.

Bats are the second largest group of mammals on the planet with over a thousand species recorded and are the only mammals than can fly sustainably. The ability to fly however comes at a price.

Bats have to sustain a very high metabolic rate in order to fly and this has the downside of elevating the amount of free radicals in their bodies which should damage their cell and DNA structure. Bats however have developed mechanisms in their genes to overcome this damage and as a by-product this has also boosted their immune systems.

This is why they may have become able to tolerate viruses like Ebola, Hendra and SARS without showing any ill effects. Their highly active immune system allows them to tolerate exposure to toxic levels of diseases which would be fatal to other animals.

I therefore hope that I can speak for all of your dedicated followers when I say that you are our Fruit Bat and we are vastly appreciative that you can visit the realms of the toxic main stream media and bring back the distilled insanity that dwells there.

    All the very best

    1. Or this may do it - the Parrot landed on the Gold Coast yesterday and come out squawking strongly against "bully" Newman. Newman, the blue blood lieberal from Tasmania, dismissed Jones' criticisms as those of a southerner that therefore do not count. Newman is on the Gold Coast today... down there amongst those many uncountable southerner blow-ins :)

  31. Dear Dorothy,

So sorry to learn that you are unwell. I do wish you a speedy recovery not least because you have had additional hazards of Optus and Apple to endure. There I can empathise. I enjoyed a pleasant break at Nelson, not all that far from my current abode at Portland. Alas, it has no Optus signal. So my mobile is useless unless I venture to Mount Gambier, Heywood or Portland - all of which defeats the purpose of a Nelson holiday.

In addition, I likewise have Mac problems at present. Not beyond fixing, and I remain convinced that they are less frustrating than Windows, but needing a little IT care, which is beyond me. The trackpad of my Macbook Pro is lapsing into wild fluctuations before returning to fairly normal after some time. It requires only a little tinkering but is something I'm unable to risk myself, being all fingers and thumbs. So it will have to wait until I visit my partner's tech-savvy son at Dandenong in about 2 weeks.

I also share some of your posters' concerns of the hazards of such a long diet of the Reptiles at The Oz. True, there is some comic relief, especially from the tabloid News Ltd efforts at the Courier-Mail and the Telegraph but nobody takes them seriously., whereas Chris Mitchell's stable is still pretending to be serious in broadsheet. It is of course impossible with that amount of Kool-aid consumed but someone has to cover it. The task has fallen to you, and your humor preserves our sanity. I'm not saying that exposure has caused your indisposition but it wouldn't have helped.

At a political blog I used to post at,there was one poster who went completely feral from constant listening to 2GB. I cut him some slack because someone had to do it and most of us shunned this exposure to senility. But it became too much when he attacked others for their loyalty to Gillard, advocating a return to Rudd and bobbing up with the same old bile whenever an opinion poll was published. It was a sad fate.

I know you are made of stronger stuff, and that such exposure to Nick Cater's smugness will not take you out. But be warned to take care. A steady recovery reading some of Dickens can refresh the soul quite nicely, as can Swift, Fielding and Sterne, even if they can only be read at a slow steady pace.

Bon recovery, as a brave the holiday house at Nelson again for a few days.

    1. GD..I would have suggested "Catch 22" for it's optimistic absurdity!...after all, everyone knows ; " ...peanut brittle on one's cheek is better than flies in one's eyes".

    2. Agreed, Jaycee. I was thinking of a distraction from present events. Catch-22 is high on my best-ever reads. But the main characters bear too alarming a resemblance to our current Ministry to allow much respite. Right now I've just seen another, with Morrison and Captain Black.

There's so many with "flies in their eyes" -Pyne, Hockey, Brandis, Abetz, Cormann that it's frightening.

  32. I can't help but notice the hypocrisy of the Australian media, crying crocodile tears over the possible execution of the Bali nine (convicted heroin traffickers) whist baying for the blood of Islamists and ignoring the blatant injustice against people like Hicks and Habib.

I know a a few people who have died of heroin overdoses. One even killed my baby grandson with an overdose.

While the death penalty is abhorrent, why the thousands of column inches devoted to a few drug smugglers just because they are Australian?

No it doesn't fit the narrative. We must demonise some and idolise others (and don't even mention the Corby circus) while ignoring the plight of a few hundred thousand muslims.

    1. The bali 9 would have led the feds to the mr bigs here. The feds gave up the bali 9 mules to protect their employers here, and to curry some favour for the hoWARd government who weren't travelling to well in Indonesia at the time either.
